From the moment we wake up to the time we come home from work, we are constantly on the go. Living in a fast-paced world, we can all agree that life is never on pause. Not even for a split millisecond. Whether it be going to work, school, or travelling afar, we tend to build up stress and tension into our lives and too often, bring it home with us. On a personal level, I myself, accumulate stress and tension into my body every day. Living in a constant state of urgency, I tend to forget to relax and enjoy life. 

With all the stress, tension, and anxiety that we build up on a daily basis, it is important to practice self-care and stay grounded. We sometimes tend to lose ourselves when we are experiencing the stresses in our working lives. Like the Snickers commercial, you’re not you when you’re hungry or in other words, you’re not you when you’re stress. Thus, it is important to take some time off during the day to restore, refresh, and rejuvenate. Taking time from your ever-so busy life is the most powerful thing you could do for your mind, spirit, and body. By this means, it brings us closer to ourselves in discovering our true potentials.

On a personal level, I am very guilty of working until my mind and body gives out. Stepping away from school work has been quite challenging for me since there are deadlines and due dates that need to be met and a list of assignments that need to be completed. As much as I want to hang out with my friends, having a social life out of school has been near impossible for me. Every second, every minute, and every hour that I have has been dedicated to school work and my job. Even coming home after a long day at school or work, I tend to give myself more work until my body cannot handle it.

It was the conversations that I had with my friends, co-workers, and family where I began to implement the practice of self care. Some of my loved ones has even called me crazy for overworking my mind and body, but time is of the essence. After overcoming one of the lowest points in my life, I realized there is more to life beyond my academics and work. Although I am grinding to become a human rights lawyer, I am also grinding to be healthy. Either I’m studying for my finals or working a closing shift, I now give myself the rest of the night to rejuvenate.

I begin my night with brewing a cup of tea and burning candles in my room. The aroma of the candles while I sip on my tea has helped me stay grounded. Depending on how I am feeling, I would pull out my yoga mat and do some yoga. During nights where I want to clear my mind and relax my body, I would meditate and listen to meditation music. Yoga and meditation has always been vital to me, especially during times where I endure more stress than I normally do. With meditation, it helps clear my mind with negative thoughts while relaxing my nerves and releasing any tension I have built up. In addition to yoga and meditation, I like to blast music through my earphones and dance my heart out. To release all the stress, tension, and anxiety I accumulate during the day, dancing helps shake it all off.

I end the night with catching up on social media or finding myself a good book to read. Feeling cozy in bed, I like to bury myself in the book and go on an adventure. Before I head to bed, I always do a prayer and pray to God. I thank God every day for giving me the strength to continue living and giving me all the opportunities in my life. Appreciating God’s work allows me to start fresh the following day. Additionally, I like to acknowledge and thank myself for continuously pushing forward every day, including those stressful days I may have.

All in all, I hope you find time to restore, refresh, and rejuvenate. Self care is so important and taking some time off for your mind, spirit, and body will benefit you in the long-run.
